Origins
- 1983: AOL began as Control Video Corporation (CVC), offering an online service called GameLine for the Atari 2600, allowing users to download games via telephone lines.
- After financial struggles, CVC rebranded as Quantum Computer Services in 1985.
The Birth of AOL
- 1989: Quantum renamed itself America Online (AOL).
- AOL targeted regular consumers — not techies — with easy-to-use dial-up internet services, chat rooms, email, news, and more.
- Famous for sending millions of free trial CDs and floppy disks in the mail (“You’ve got mail!”), AOL exploded in popularity.
Peak Popularity
- 1990s: AOL became the largest internet service provider (ISP) in the U.S.
- By 2000, it had over 25 million subscribers.
- AOL became synonymous with “getting online” for many Americans during the early internet era.
AOL and Time Warner Merger
- 2000: AOL merged with Time Warner in a deal valued at $165 billion — the largest merger in U.S. history at the time.
- The merger was intended to combine AOL’s digital reach with Time Warner’s content, but it quickly soured.
- The dot-com bubble burst, AOL’s subscriber base shrank, and the value of the merged company plummeted.
Decline
- As broadband internet (cable and DSL) became more common in the 2000s, dial-up access (AOL’s bread and butter) became obsolete.
- AOL tried to pivot into a media company, acquiring sites like The Huffington Post, TechCrunch, and Engadget.
- In 2009, Time Warner spun off AOL as a separate company.
Recent History
- 2015: AOL was purchased by Verizon for $4.4 billion.
- Verizon attempted to build a digital media business by combining AOL with Yahoo! (forming a division called Oath, later Verizon Media).
- 2021: Verizon sold AOL and Yahoo to a private equity firm, Apollo Global Management, for $5 billion.
- Today, AOL is a small part of Yahoo, focusing mostly on digital publishing and advertising tech — a shadow of its former self.
